Getting Started with Wordpress

Published by debtbuster at 5:04 pm under Blogs

I was first introduced to Wordpress after taking the Bloggers Paycheck course by John Yeo who showed me that Wordpress is by far the best blog platform that you will use.

While it is true there are many other blogging tools, if you really want to establish yourself online and make money. Wordpress is the best platform.

Why?

Because this is an open source application you can get access to a lot of free themes for your site.  You also get literally thousands of free plugins. Plugins are mini-applications to Wordlress that ehhance the blog and user experience.

Wordpress is also a state of the art platform with many big name companies using them, such as The New York Times and CNN.

Let me tell you a secret, you can also blog from your iphone!  For someone that stuggled to make money as a PPC affiliate with iPhone offers, this is totally the best aspect. With my iPhone I can just about update my blogs from anywhere.I actually blog whenever and wherever I want. The train, airport, even the beach. I put out the right message and information as soon as I think about it.  I am always in contact with my readers.

So you are now set to start blogging?Don’t get caught like a lot of people that stop blogging only a few posts in. Tie in your hobbies and passion to ensure great content and longevity of your blog. This will keep you blogging and make money.

Let’s briefly look at installing wordpress, the easy way.The first thing to do is register a domain name. That is the easy part. There are plenty of domain providers to choose from. I personally use Planetdomiain simple to use and straight forward.

Now, I don’t however use their hosting services, I use Hostgator for the reason you get, unlimited disk, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited number of websites, which is very important if you find yourself with an online empire.  Finally, get FileZilla, this is a free FTP program that you will need to upload wordpress themes and other things to your site.

Now that you have this setup, you log into your hosting account and access the sites cPanel.  Within cPanel there is a tool called Fantastico, this is a utility that has a lot of scripts that you can install for your webiste such as ecommerce, forums etc.  But the one we want is Wordpress.

Don’t let the large amount of options here worry you, look under the second header ‘blogs’ and you will find Wordpress.Click on Wordpress and then ‘New Installation’.Complate all the details ensuring you take note of your admin name and password. You will need to log into the adminstration area to be able to post to your blog.

Your blog is now up and running! The following should be done straight away.

Log into the admin area and delete the “Hello World” post and any other posts/ comments wordpress installs. You simply go to Manage and then posts and delete.

Go to Manage’ and then ‘Pages’ and select ‘About’.Change the ‘About’ information to wherever suites you best.

Go to the wordpress site.org and click on the menu item ‘extend’ and then ‘themes’.Select on of the free themes that you would like, download it and extract to a local file.

Open your FTO program of choice and place in your relevant FTP details. Find your theme that you downloaded and extracted and upload to wordpress.  Note that the file path is. Public_html ->wp-content -> themes.

Now that you are done you can blog away and start to generate that traffic. There is more to using wordpress then simply posting. There are numerous plug-in that you can use to enhance your site. Anything form social bookmarking tools, adsense, back-up, automatic upgrades and many more.
